Pune: In a major clinical breakthrough, Manipal Hospital Baner has successfully performed its first high-precision Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) on a 24-year-old patient with a relapsed Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) located in an eloquent region of the brain.
The patient, who had previously undergone GammaKnife therapy in 2021, experienced a recurrence that posed significant surgical risks due to the AVM’s location in a neurologically sensitive area.
AVM is a rare but serious condition where abnormal connections between arteries and veins can result in life-threatening bleeding and neurological impairment. In this case, the lesion’s critical positioning ruled out conventional neurosurgical interventions, making SRS the safest and most effective approach.
“This case required utmost precision due to the AVM’s placement in a highly functional brain region,” said Dr Karan Chanchlani, Consultant – Radiation Oncology at Manipal Hospital Baner.
“We delivered a targeted high-dose treatment in a single session using sub-millimeter accuracy. Leveraging advanced imaging techniques like Digital Subtraction Angiography and MR TOF sequences, we mapped the recurrence and executed a frameless, non-invasive radiosurgery plan.”
The procedure was performed using frameless SRS systems, eliminating the need for invasive head frames and enhancing patient comfort. The treatment was completed in a single session, and the patient showed no complications post-procedure. He is now stable, ambulatory, and recovering well.
