Pune: In a breakthrough medical case, Manipal Hospitals, Baner, successfully performed a complex brain bypass surgery (STA-MCA bypass) on a 32-year-old software engineer, resulting in not just life-saving intervention but an unexpected restoration of vision.

The patient had been experiencing repeated ischemic episodes – temporary strokes – along with a complete loss of vision in one eye.

Following diagnosis, doctors found a total blockage in the right middle cerebral artery (MCA) and suspected Moya Moya disease, a rare and progressive vascular disorder that leads to narrowing or blockage of arteries in the brain.

Brain Bypass Surgery: Surgical Precision

Due to the non-stentable nature of the occlusion and lack of distal blood flow, conventional treatments were ruled out. The team led by Dr Amit Dhakoji, Head of Neurosurgery, opted for a superficial temporal artery to middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) bypass – a highly specialized form of brain bypass surgery.

“We rerouted the superficial temporal artery to bypass the blockage in the MCA and restore blood flow,” said Dr. Dhakoji. “The surgery not only stopped the patient’s recurring strokes but surprisingly led to partial restoration of vision in the previously blind eye.”

Post-operative recovery was smooth, and the patient showed significant neurological improvement, including restored function and vision – an outcome that even the surgical team hadn’t expected.

Anand Mote, Cluster Director, Manipal Hospital Baner, added, “This case highlights our expertise in handling rare and complex neurosurgical cases with precision, compassion, and teamwork. Our ability to deliver cutting-edge brain bypass surgery underlines our leadership in advanced neurological care.”

The surgery was performed by a team comprising Dr Amit Dhakoji, Dr Shrey Kumar Shah, and skilled support staff at Manipal Hospitals, Baner.

This successful intervention reinforces Manipal Hospitals’ commitment to providing advanced neurosurgical treatments that change lives and set new benchmarks in India’s healthcare landscape.
