Pune: In a rare and complex pediatric case, doctors at Manipal Hospital Kharadi successfully removed large ureteric and urethral stones from a 7-year-old boy using advanced laser-based minimally invasive surgery, marking a milestone in pediatric urology.

The child had been battling recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), painful urination, and unexplained abdominal discomfort for over a year.

Despite visiting several hospitals, his symptoms were only temporarily managed without accurate diagnosis or resolution.

Upon admission to Manipal Hospital Kharadi, a detailed CT KUB scan performed under the supervision of Dr Ankit Sharma, Consultant – Urology, revealed the presence of multiple large urinary calculi, including a rare simultaneous occurrence of stones in both the ureter and urethra—a condition seldom seen in children.

While open surgery was earlier advised at other hospitals, the Manipal Kharadi team opted for a minimally invasive approach using Laser Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy (Laser URSL). This state-of-the-art procedure involves no external incision and uses laser energy to precisely disintegrate the stones, significantly reducing recovery time and surgical risks.

“Recurrent UTIs in children should never be dismissed,” said Dr Ankit Sharma. “This case highlights how persistent urinary symptoms in kids can signal serious urological conditions. With timely diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment, we avoided the need for open surgery and achieved complete recovery for the patient.”

The child was discharged the very next day, pain-free and on the path to full recovery.

Parameswar Das, Director, Manipal Hospital Kharadi, added, “Early diagnosis is vital, especially in pediatric patients where symptoms can be subtle. Our hospital remains committed to delivering cutting-edge urological care with minimal disruption to the child’s life, ensuring safety, precision, and compassion through a multidisciplinary approach.”

Manipal Hospital Kharadi Leadership in Peadiatric Urology

This successful intervention underscores Manipal Hospital Kharadi’s leadership in pediatric urology and its commitment to using the latest technology for safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatments.

Parents are urged to take recurring urinary symptoms in children seriously. Early intervention can prevent complications, ensure long-term health, and restore a child’s quality of life.
