Pune: Manipal Hospital Kharadi successfully treated a 13-year-old boy who sustained life-threatening injuries after falling from the fifth floor of a residential building.
The child arrived at the hospital in an unconscious state, with critically low blood pressure (50 mmHg), hemoglobin levels at 5g/dL, and signs of internal bleeding.
The impact of the fall caused multiple complex injuries including fractures in the femur (thigh bone), pelvis, hand, foot, and elbow, as well as spinal trauma and respiratory complications.

Within hours of admission, the boy was taken into surgery for critical stabilization procedures that continued over a span of three days.
Dr Vinay Kumar Gautam, Consultant – Orthopedic Surgery at Manipal Hospital Kharadi, led the emergency orthopedic interventions, beginning with a midnight operation to address the hand and femur fractures.
“After resuscitation, blood transfusions were administered and advanced imaging confirmed internal injuries but ruled out the need for neurosurgery. Due to the severity of injuries and low platelet count, we performed multiple surgeries in stages to manage the risk of bleeding and infection,” he said.
Subsequent procedures included surgical fixation for long bone fractures, pelvic and foot reconstruction, spinal stabilization, and wound debridement.
