Mumbai: In a significant boost to public healthcare services, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is building a 16-storey multispecialty hospital with a dedicated eye care wing in Kamathipura.
The hospital, being developed with facilities comparable to private hospitals, is scheduled to open by January 2026.
Situated on Maulana Shaukat Ali Road, opposite Durgadevi Garden and behind the existing Murli Deora Eye Hospital building, the new facility in Kamathipura aims to provide affordable treatment to citizens who cannot afford the rising costs of private medical care. Presently, cataract surgeries at private hospitals cost upwards of ₹50,000 per eye, prompting many to turn to public hospitals like JJ for eye treatment.
Kamathipura Hospital Facilities
To address this growing demand, the BMC’s health department is developing the hospital with cutting-edge facilities. As of now, 60 per cent of the construction is complete, and the remaining work is targeted for completion by December 2025. The hospital is expected to be operational from January 2026.
The facility will cater to a range of eye-related ailments. Specialist doctors will conduct cataract surgeries and treat serious ophthalmic conditions using modern equipment and advanced operation theatres.
An outpatient department (OPD) will be set up for preliminary consultations, with further admission provided to patients requiring more extensive treatment.
Beyond eye care, the hospital will also include a dialysis centre and have separate wards for women and children. These additions are aimed at easing the burden on larger civic hospitals such as Nair, Sion, and KEM by offering accessible care for common ailments within the locality.
The health department affirms that the hospital will deliver private-hospital-level services at no cost or at nominal charges to Mumbai residents.
