Pune: In a remarkable display of advanced neonatal care, Inamdar Multispeciality Hospital in Pune successfully treated and discharged a 20-day-old preterm infant who overcame multiple life-threatening complications, including Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) – a rare and severe intestinal disease affecting premature babies.
Born on the night of April 19, 2025, at 34 weeks and 6 days via emergency C-section and weighing 2.3 kg, the baby suffered from acute respiratory distress and was immediately transferred to the hospital’s state-of-the-art NICU.
Within 48 hours, the infant developed NEC along with symptoms of sepsis, urinary retention, and abdominal swelling, escalating the case into a surgical emergency.
Under the expert care of Dr Pranav Jadhav, Paediatric Surgeon at Inamdar Multispeciality Hospital, an exploratory laparotomy with ileo-ileal anastomosis was successfully performed.
The neonatal care team, led by Dr Ashwin Borade and Dr Anand Narnaware, ensured meticulous post-surgical monitoring, gradually reintroducing feeds while managing episodes of intolerance and training the anxious parents throughout the recovery journey.

On May 10, 2025, the infant was discharged from the NICU—feeding independently, neurologically stable, and with normal results in screenings for hydrocephalus, anemia of prematurity, and hearing impairment.
