Mumbai/Kolkata: A 19-month-old boy, Agastya, was successfully saved through a high-precision laparoscopic surgery at Manipal Hospital Mukundapur after swallowing a magnetic button battery – a potentially fatal foreign object.
The complex yet minimally invasive procedure was led by Dr Subhasis Saha, Consultant – Pediatric Surgeon, and resulted in a scarless recovery for the child.
The toddler was admitted on May 2, presenting symptoms of green vomiting and abdominal pain. Imaging revealed a magnetic battery lodged in his stomach. An endoscopic removal attempt that night was unsuccessful, prompting urgent laparoscopic intervention the following morning.
Dr. Saha performed the surgery by accessing the stomach through small incisions, removing the embedded battery without harming adjacent organs. Agastya resumed normal eating within three days and was discharged in stable condition.
“This was a race against time,” said Dr. Saha. “Magnetic button batteries can cause severe damage very quickly. In this case, endoscopy wasn’t an option due to the battery’s location. Thankfully, laparoscopic surgery allowed us to operate with precision, ensuring no visible scars and quicker recovery.”
The child’s father, Mr. Vinay, a marketing professional from Survey Park near EM Bypass, shared how the incident unfolded. “We had no idea that a battery from one of Agastya’s toys had come loose. After an initial visit to a local clinic, we contacted Dr Jemsy Jose at Manipal Hospital Mukundapur, who has been Agastya’s pediatrician since birth. Their quick response saved our child’s life.”
Dr Ayanabh Debgupta, Regional COO – East, Manipal Hospitals, commented, “This case is a testament to the emergency preparedness and expertise of our team at Manipal Hospital Mukundapur. It also serves as a strong reminder for parents to be vigilant about the hazards posed by small objects in a child’s environment.”
