Kolkata: Manipal Hospital Dhakuria has successfully completed its first Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) on a 60-year-old woman diagnosed with advanced peritoneal carcinomatosis.
The procedure was led by Dr Ashutosh Daga, Medical Oncologist, and Dr Sagnik Ray, Surgical Oncologist, marking a turning point in the hospital’s cancer treatment capabilities.
The patient had initially been misdiagnosed at another facility with chronic liver failure and ascites. Upon admission to Manipal Hospital, she experienced respiratory distress and was admitted to the ICU, where fluid was drained from her lungs and chemotherapy was initiated.

Over a period of five months, she showed substantial improvement and was eventually deemed fit for surgery.
“We are proud to have performed our first CRS with HIPEC at Manipal Hospital Dhakuria – establishing our position as a center for comprehensive cancer care,” said Dr Ashutosh Daga. “This successful case sets the stage for undertaking more complex procedures for advanced cancers.”
The 12-hour procedure combined optimal cytoreduction surgery with heated intra-peritoneal chemotherapy using a specialized HIPEC machine. The patient responded well to the treatment and was discharged in stable condition on the ninth post-operative day.
“This treatment demands precise surgical intervention and coordinated efforts across departments like Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Transfusion Medicine,” added Dr Sagnik Ray. “The patient’s recovery was exceptional and showcases the potential of HIPEC in treating select advanced malignancies.”

Manipal Hospital Dhakuria: Multidisciplinary Breakthrough
CRS with HIPEC is a cutting-edge treatment for advanced abdominal cancers, particularly in gynecological and gastrointestinal malignancies. It involves removing visible tumors through surgery, followed by the delivery of heated chemotherapy directly into the abdominal cavity to kill residual cancer cells.
This multidisciplinary breakthrough reaffirms Manipal Hospital Dhakuria’s role in pushing boundaries in complex cancer treatment, offering new hope for patients diagnosed with advanced peritoneal carcinomatosis and related malignancies.
